Ulticom Joins JAIN Community to Accelerate Convergence of Telephony and IP Networks
Atlanta, GA, SUPERCOMM, June 8, 1999: Ulticom, Inc., formerly known as DGM&S Telecom, the leader in network signaling call control, is steering an effort to standardize application programming interfaces (APIs) through the JAIN™ (™ APIs for Integrated Networks) initiative led by Sun Microsystems, Inc. This work will enable the convergence of telephony networks and Internet Protocol (IP) networks.
As part of the Phase II JAIN activity, Ulticom will lead in the Protocol Expert Group (PEG) the JAIN ISUP subgroup. ISUP, the Integrated Services Digital Network User Part of the telephone signaling protocol known as SS7, determines the procedures for setting up, coordinating and taking down calls on the world's telephone networks. Ulticom's work will ensure that the JAIN™ ISUP API will be able to establish common interfaces that will enable Intelligent Network telephony applications to be portable across different network infrastructures, such as the Internet.
"We are proud to have Dr. In-Sheng Cheng, Principal Engineer, and Mike Song, Senior Software Engineer, of our SignalWare engineering group play key roles in this important work," said G. Stephen Northridge, Chief Technology Officer of Ulticom. "We believe strongly in JAIN's potential for speeding delivery of new, advanced telecommunications services across different network infrastructures."
"Ulticom has taken a clear leadership position by spearheading the JAIN ISUP effort," said Douglas Tait, IN Specialist and PEG Leader at Sun Microsystems. "Building on its broad expertise in network signaling for the Java/JAIN platform, Ulticom's role in JAIN ISUP is a perfect compliment to its products."
Ulticom is a charter member of JAIN, and has been instrumental in efforts to define JAIN interfaces to the SS7 protocol stack layers. Additionally, Ulticom has been an active participant in some of the JAIN Application Expert Groups (AEGs). Steven Davis, Vice President for Research and Development of Ulticom, along with JC Lin, Director of Software Engineering for Ulticom's Nexworx products, have key roles in the AEGs for JAIN Call Control APIs for Integrated Networks, the JAIN Parlay APIs for Integrated Networks and other resources API-focused areas.
