The CAMEL (Customized Application of Mobile Enhanced Logic) Application Part, or
CAP, enabler allows for the implementation of carrier-grade, value added services
such as unified messaging, prepaid, fraud control and Freephone in both the
GSM voice and GPRS data networks. CAMEL is a means of adding intelligent
applications to mobile (rather than fixed) networks. It builds upon established
practices in the fixed line telephony business that are generally classed under
the heading of INAP (Intelligent Network Application Part).
GSM voice and data switching platforms implement CAP in order to query a centralized
Service Control Point (SCP) for instruction on how to process a call per carrier
specific processing instruction.
CAMEL is the first vendor independent Intelligent Networking (IN) standard, as defined
initially by ETSI and now by the 3rd
Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), a global organization developing
specifications for mobile networks. As such, services implemented via CAMEL are
at home in networks worldwide.
Applications utilize CAP for providing advanced services to subscribers within the
operators network as well as when roaming between networks. This allows services
offered in the home network to work seamlessly regardless of where a subscriber
may be.
CAP provides a mechanism to allow the visited network to query the home network
and invoke advanced call-processing services. When a subscriber registers with a
visited network, the home network supplies triggering information that is used to
access service logic in the home SCP. Because the home network provides services,
an operator is able to offer a consistent service look and feel across the networks
of its roaming partners.
The Signalware®
CAP capability is an enabling component of the Signalware family. It is utilized
by applications implementing such functionalities as a SCP, Mobile Switching Center
(MSC), or serving GPRS support node (SGSN). Signalware's CAP feature is utilized
when an application sends a received message to the CAP library for decoding. By
utilizing Signalware's CAP capability, vendors can significantly cut time to market
and reduce support and maintenance costs.
Signalware® CAP is provided as a library to be used with the SS7
Transaction Capabilities Application Part (TCAP). The library may be accessed
via a traditional SS7 stack or may be utilized with
SIGTRAN. This flexibility allows the Signalware CAP library to be used in
implementing either the switching or service control elements on either side of
the interface in all current generations of GSM mobile networks. Through the use
of SIGTRAN, applications developed in second generation (2G) networks can be migrated
to a common packet network and be utilized in NexGen mobile networks, thus protecting
investments and aiding network evolution.
